A few years ago we acquired a bamboo plant in a small pot. We decided that it ought to be in a bigger pot, the one that it is in now, maybe a foot high and getting on for a foot across; a pale brown thing which is probably not made of the same material as the red earthenware pots we had when I was small. Along the way we found that the plant had been very pot bound, and its roots (as I recall) were mixed up with a large lump of some previous pot. So, all things considered, we thought it might be a while before it got going again.
Sat on a spot behind the garage which, at this time of year, gets a lot of sun from 1300 onwards.
But the leaves are a rather sickly looking yellow-green and it did not seem to be putting on a lot of growth. I accused BH of overwatering. She riposted with it needing to be fed.
Then yesterday, I noticed these huge shoots on it, some as much as two or three feet long - and not yet sporting any leaves. Two left in the snap (if you click to enlarge) and one right, with more below. Clearly signs of considerable vigour. But not so much that it is not odd that I have not noticed them before. Three whole negatives for the price of one!
So maybe we do not need to change the regime after all.
PS 1: snap taken at 11.49.45, so the sun has not quite made it to the corner, and I was able to stand in the shadow to take the snap - not that that made the screen on my telephone very visible; just about enough to be able to work the screen lock. But the sun is getting there, as can be seen left.
PS 2: the next morning: I have decided now that the bamboo might have once been in a pale brown pot, and we do own a number of such pots, some large, some with a lot of decorative trim, but the bamboo is now in a large plain, black plastic pot, a rather rubbery sort of plastic, with some drainage holes around its base. So yesterday evening clearly saw a conflation of pots. Unreliable witness.
