Another outing

Following yesterday's outing to Epsom, today saw a bicycle trip down Horton Lane, that is to say from south the north. The thinking here being that a short pull up to the church on Christ Church Road, followed by a downhill run down Horton Lane with the cold north wind against me, would be a lot easier than a long pull up Horton Hill with the wind behind me.

Hawthorne well past its prime on Horton Lane, where it can be glorious if you catch it on the right day. But there was a fair amount of elder in flower in the hedges and a lot of daisies in flower in the verges. Which inquiry suggests were leucanthemum vulgare, aka ox-eye daisy or dog daisy. Not to be confused with Michaelmas daisies which are generally lilac rather than white in colour, and flower, as the name might suggest, in the autumn. See reference 2.

Enough traffic that one would not want to walk down the middle of the road, as one can on our estate.

Onto West Ewell, where the convenience stores and at least one café were open, the café with at least one customer inside.

The pull over the railway bridge made me puff a bit, after which around Bourne Hall and into Ewell Village, much the same story at West Ewell.

Into East Street then through a quiet Kiln Lane junction, the turning for the big Sainsbury's. Maybe another café. There were people working on the new flats on the Kings Arms' site.

Small Thames Water tanker still at the Hook Road junction, just along from the lap dancing club. Also some Thames Water men from a van actually doing something. Perhaps the men in suits have moved on from squabbling about who has to pay for whatever has happened to the drains there.

Right into Hook Road, left at Lower Court Road and so to Manor Green Road. TB, with its new-model drinking area out front, which may come into its own when they open the public houses again. Past Costcutter and the butcher and so home. Something less than an hour altogether and another pleasant change from the brick walk.

There were a lot of Kelly Communications and BT Openreach vans out and about - presumably beavering away on the fibre which did not make it along our road (see reference 3) - but once again, no trolleys.
