Village baker

Yesterday, we bought a large white loaf, for less than £2, from a table and van parked up outside Tavistock Town Hall. An operation which we think was called the Teign Valley Bakery, operating from a shed (probably illustrated) in a village called Christow, just by the Teign, a little to the west of Exeter.

Bread looked OK and tasted pretty good this morning. A little doughy, not fully cooked according to foreign standards, but proper English white bread, suitable for use with butter or jam. I tried both. Also the sort of bread which is good for making bacon sandwiches.

Much better than the factory tin loaves or even the rather dry, Frenchified round loaves that they sell in places like Waitrose. According to the tickets, from their in-store bakery - although I believe that most of it must arrive at the store in a near oven ready condition.
