At some point during the last couple of days we have been reminded that the Lord created the first woman by reworking a rib from the first man. Probably an old sculpture in one of the churches we have visited, possibly the one included left or one like it.
It now occurs to me that this was a rather odd proceeding. Given that women come with most of the reproductive kit, would it not have been much simpler for the first human being to have been a woman? The Lord could then have done the Immaculate Conception trick he subsequently pulled off with the Virgin Mary to produce the first man; a trick which seems much more plausible than the business with the rib.
Perhaps the point is that the Ancient Greeks, who invented the Immaculate Conception, were a good deal better educated than the Ancient Hebrews who wrote the Genesis story. Perhaps also the Ancient Hebrews were a bit sexist, keen to retain all the leading roles for men.
