Austerity

It is an odd comment on the way that we conduct our affairs, that a decade into austerity, that is to say poverty for many, somebody has found several billion pounds to built a theme park - an English version of Disneyland - on a site between Swanscombe and the River Thames, more or less opposite Thurrock and Greys. A site which looks green from the satellite and which one supposes is presently mainly marsh or rough grazing. Someone has no doubt made a killing.

I wondered who was putting the money up. Perhaps our good friends the Saudis? Or some consortium of Russian oligarchs? But actually no, as according to a Kent online newspaper: 'The theme park plans have been financially backed by Dr Abdulla Al-Humaidi, the Kuwaiti chairman and owner of Ebbsfleet United Football Club, since 2013'. Can't find out much else about him.

Meanwhile, I associate to the famous saying of Marie Antoinette about letting them eat cake. And paying for the cake by pouring a bit more money into the Kuwaiti coffers. Yet another drain on our country's resources.
