Looking to the future, if it looks likely that we are going to have more epidemics of the present sort, maybe we ought to establish a reserve corps of health workers, rather in the way that the armed forces have reserves.

My impression is that there is a high turnover of health workers, so the idea would be that health workers who left the profession, for one reason or another, perhaps to have a family, would be given the option of joining the reserve.

The deal would be that they got some kind of a monthly retainer, perhaps some proportion of their salary in their last year of regular work, in return for which they would do regular training to maintain skill levels and they would be liable to be called up when there was an epidemic. Any present employers would be expected to cooperate.

Maybe have drill halls in the way of the territorials - and the yeomanry of old. Certainly reserve assets, like hospitals, beds, equipment and consumables.
