Cuckoo pint

We may not hear cuckoos from the Common any more, but we do get cuckoo pints, as mentioned, for example, yesterday and at reference 1.

The day before yesterday we had a fine one on the way, at the curious tubular stage, tall and pointed with a swollen base, but yesterday it did not look at all well.

While today we have one in full bloom, snapped left. Back on the left, front in the middle. With a small but pretty, petalled flower to be seen at the base, inside the bulb. At least that is what it looked like - with the diagram offered by Bing having confused me.

And right is a second plant, neatly decapitated by something or other. Perhaps the slugs and snails - of which there are no doubt plenty hiding under the ivy and elsewhere - are fond of them?
