I managed without Maigret for slightly less than a week. So at reference 1, I noticed the second reading of the last Maigret story, 'Maigret et Monsieur Charles', while yesterday I restarted with the first, 'Pietr-le-Letton'. I notice also that there may be temporal anomalies in that these stories may not have been first published in quite the same order as they were written.
By way of a birthday present I have just attempted to buy reference 2 from Amazon Canada, which may resolve this matter. Attempted in the sense that Amazon Canada says that this book is temporarily out of stock, so we shall see whether it arrives in time. Not available at all from Amazon UK or Amazon France.
Maigret was preferred to Dostoevsky's 'The Idiot', although I am slowly making headway, and to Dumas's 'La Dame aux Camélias', apparently a sensation in the Russia of the time of the idiot, with otherwise sensible men tricking each other to corner the market in camellias of the colour of the day.
