Crocodiles - supplemental

Following the post at reference 1, I have started to read the French story about the Sahara. When I noticed the 'CPL's worked into the design of the cover. While the few words there are on the otherwise white spine are in typescript.

Closer inspection suggests that the book had been either bound or rebound at some point which suggests that the cover might have been a special for Croydon Public Libraries, rather than a product of the publisher over the pond, the Columbia University Press.

PS: I am reminded that the French record in Algeria in the nineteenth century is, in many ways, much worse than ours in India. With the only mitigating factor being that the number of people involved was much smaller.
