A spot of Tokaji

For the first time for seems like quite a long time, a spot of Tokaji - a place which I used to spell Tokay or Tokai - a spelling which is now a bit old-hat. According to the Windows search feature the nearest that the blog comes is 'tokamak', but I feel sure that quite a long time is not ten years or more.

This one was very good, sweet and seemed a good deal stronger than the 12.5% on the bottle would suggest. Perhaps it was just as well that we only had a half bottle.

It looks like the grower was quick off the blocks to grab a domain name, as reference 1 is him, rather than Takaji in general. There also seems to be some dispute about the presence or otherwise of the terminal 'i', suggesting that some nationalist language scholars have got in on the spelling, perhaps calling for true Hungarian purity of the language and its spelling. As far as the wine is concerned, I did not find this particular one, but I can offer the following hint about late harvest: '... A late harvest wine made from overripe and shrivelled grapes...'. Perhaps they could use a more sympathetic translator.

I think I first drank this sort of wine in the form of a bottle from the Polish restaurant called Polonia, in Grosvenor Gardens, more or less opposite Sandbergs, the materials engineers I once used to work for. Not that there is any connection, not being able to afford the former when I worked for the latter. Polish restaurant long gone, Sandbergs just gone.

PS: the winery castle is in a part of Hungary where all the buildings appear to be single storey and where Google Street View has only made it the larger roads - with 'H-3916 Bodrogkeresztúr, Iskola köz 15' not qualifying.
