A new bath

A new to us bath, snapped in the margins of our visit to Guildford last week, noticed at reference 1.

When I was small, baths were usually made of cast iron or pressed steel - with our present bath being of this last variety. Some people, possibly rich people, had baths made of some heavy duty ceramic material, rather like a large version of a Belfast sink. I once came across such baths, free-standing in the middle of large bath rooms, in a small country house somewhere near Aberdeen. Bathrooms which might well have been rather cold in the winter in the absence of serious heating,  but I forget what the heating arrangements were. A place which still seems to exist if reference 2 is anything to go by.

More recently we have had rather unsatisfactory baths made of glass fibre and rather elaborate & expensive baths made of cast iron, this last having come back into fashion for those with money. Perhaps with claw feet, perhaps modelled on those of a large bird, a farm animal or a lion. Perhaps stood on a marble pedestal in the middle of a large room, fit for inclusion in a Sunday supplement. Otherwise an accident waiting to happen.

More recently still we have had the stone baths from a shop in Wigmore Street. Possibly made of sheets of marble and certainly coming with a lot of sharp corners with which to do oneself a serious injury. Another accident waiting to happen. See reference 3.

Rather different is the rather space-age, walk in bath tub provided at the Longmead Centre, which comes complete with an attendant. FIL was very pleased, the one or two times that he used it.

While I don't know what the bath snapped above is made of. Perhaps some sort of plastic composite? Unfortunately the shop containing the bath was shut at the time and it is rather a long way to go to find out. Maybe Amazon would turn them up?

PS: we think we saw the large bath mentioned at the end of reference 3 being taken out a few weeks ago. With much less fanfare and machinery than the putting in involved. Or perhaps it was just the children's tub, once next to the main tub for grown ups.
