I have not inquired into the merits of extra millions being provided for free school meals over the summer for children from families in need, but I am slightly irritated that someone who earns vast amounts of money from football should be pressing the government to top up the very families who provided said vast amounts of money.
A bit of a stretch, but football used to be a largely working class sport and the money in football clubs, the monies from which footballers' wages were drawn, mostly came from that working class, from their buying tickets to watch matches live and from their buying access to television screenings of those matches.
All a bit too much like the boss of Tesco's pressing government to top up the families of all the Tesco's workers on the minimum wage from central funds. That is to say Tesco's, their bosses and their customers being subsidised from central funds. Note the silly circularity here: these customers are the very people who provide those central funds. While the bosses probably make other arrangements.
Let's hope that the someone in question has not hired clever lawyers and accountants to do clever things with his tax and that he is putting something reasonable back into said central funds.
