Watering the trees

I am sorry to report that our council seems, once again, to have fallen into the trap of planting more trees than it can afford to water. In this case for our expensively refurbished market square.

I dare say they have got plenty of other things to worry about just presently and the weather has not been kind to newly planted trees this year, but it does seem a pity to spend what must be a lot of money on having large trees planted - like many of the rest of us, the council likes an instant garden - and then not have the money to water them. With most of the dozen or more trees that were planted earlier this year, or perhaps late last year, looking rather the worse for wear - with the one snapped here not being in the worst case by any means. Where was the council water bowser when they needed it?

To be fair, I should say that we, that is to say the people who live or work in Epsom, are not much better about this than the council. In the present case, watering the trees is clearly a job for the council. But I have quite often noticed cases where a tree in need could have been watered by a nearby house or a nearby business. Collectively, we are all too likely to say that it is someone else's job. See, for example, reference 1.
