For a change, a scientific fake.
Reading the chapter in reference 1 (a new book, but an old edition, near twenty years old, obtained for a knock down price) about neurotransmitters, I read that part of the definition of same is that it should be possible to fake it. That is to say, if you have neuron A firing up neuron B by means of neurotransmitter C, then you must be able to achieve the same effect by injecting a suitable amount of C into the roots of B, in the absence of A.
I suppose part of the point of this requirement is that it means you cannot claim your discovery as a new neurotransmitter unless you know enough about it to be able to isolate the stuff in the laboratory.
Reference 1: Principles of Neural Science - Eric R. Kandel, James H. Schwartz, Thomas M. Jessell - 2000.
Reference 2: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Neurotransmitter. Possibly more accessible than reference 1 - in the sense of accessible at a touch of the button. The beginnings of the chapters of reference 1, at least the ones I have looked at so far, are well written.
