We are still reading the Guardian noticed at reference 1. One clearly gets better value out of a thick newspaper of this sort if one does not buy it every day - even if the amount of news of interest in it falls well short of the FT.
So this morning, not impressed that two very senior officers of our Metropolitan Police Force saw fit to take jobs with Murdoch and/or the late News of the World when they retired, generous pension arrangements for policemen notwithstanding. A depressing combination of greed and poor judgement. I ponder about whether this was worse than Clegg taking pieces of silver from Facebook. He no doubt argues that he can do more good working inside the tent than lobbing bricks at it from the outside - an argument that does not run so well at the News of the World.
And the signs are that Commissioner Dick will ride over this scandal, just like she rode over the last one (in Stockwell). How on earth does she manage it?
Then there was the exclusive club in Australia which has just declined, once again, to admit women as members - although they are admitted as guests. It continues to puzzle me why a woman would want to join a club for men which prefers not to have women. Although the argument gets more complicated if the club is used for the conduct of public business as well as for pleasure.
Regarding which a corespondent once pointed out to me that the great thing about men's clubs was that one could go and enjoy oneself without being tempted to dally with members of the opposite sex - staff perhaps another matter - and without their wives having to worry about same. What would the bra-burners have to say about that?
