About this time last year, I noticed some massive shoots emerging from an otherwise rather sickly looking bamboo. I am pleased to be able to report that things are about the same this year, although the two shoots so far involved are a lot shorter than they were by early June last year - with the pink bases visible at the front of the tub. Perhaps they will catch up.
And regarding sickly looking, I noticed that the pot bamboos at TB look like this one when in a sunny position, but much greener and healthier when in a shaded position. However, while Wikipedia talks of warm, moist and tropical at reference 4, it does not offer guidance to the tub grower. Perhaps we shall have to feel our own way.
PS 1: sunflowers bottom right coming on. Now properly staked with 3 foot bamboos from the Old Moat Garden Centre. We are still some way off being self-sufficient in that department.
PS 2: the Old Moat looks much more like the Chessington Garden Centre these days, with lots of fancy goods for sale, the sort of thing also to be found in TK Maxx - or in gift and décor shops in places like Ashburton, for which see, for example, reference 3. Just have to get used to the idea that a small nursery is no longer a business proposition. Not the plant sort anyway.
