Yesterday, we took delivery of the parcel from Aubenas noticed at reference 1. The best wrapped parcel that I remember getting.
Packets of books wrapped in white paper and cling filmed for extra protection. Packets in sturdy cardboard box. Cardboard box wrapped and taped. All done with some considerable neatness and care; a pleasure to receive and to unwrap.
The nearest thing from the past was the parcels I used to get at Christmas and on birthdays from my aunt in Montréal. A little while ago now, before modern packing tape and cling film had been invented. So the first wrapping was newspaper & string and the second wrapping was brown paper, gummed paper tape & more string for extra security. Perhaps a little cardboard, perhaps old cereal packets, between the inner and outer wrapping. Large customs declaration stuck on the outside - customs declarations which will, presumably, reappear on parcels such as this if we leave the Customs Union.
While FIL used to use his old cereal packets for shopping lists and for various kinds of score card. For example, his financial affairs and his Scrabble scores.
PS: I am reminded that their Customs Union was an important stage on the way to making Germany a rich and powerful country. Perhaps the present generation of Tories never did history at school.
