A bit of poking around with a thin trowel and the aloe was removed from its pot, more or less in one piece. Much wet soil and much evidence of rotting roots at the bottom of the pot - not that it looked as if the aloe had many roots for its size in the first place. Not that sort of plant.
Now re-potted, rather roughly, in a deeper pot, with holes and a couple of inches of gravel at the bottom. On the lookout for something more suitable to stand it on, the plastic holder shown here being rather flimsy for a pot of this size.
We shall wait and see how the aloe responds to its trauma.
