As previously noticed our town council is spending a lot of money to remodel the traffic flow in the centre of our town. There may also be forlorn hopes that this will drive up footfall in the shops.
Stage 13 of these works appears to consist of chopping down most of the trees in the market square - trees which I believe were planted at the time of the last remodelling, perhaps twenty five years ago. What are we going to get in their place?
And while I am on trees, we hear from the voluntary group which supplements the council's own tree planting operations, that they get lots of grief from various organs of local government when they propose planting a tree somewhere. It seems that well over half these proposals get turned down for one reason or another, presumably proximity to one bit of underground pipe or another. Proximity to schools where there might be children for the trees to fall on? Proximity to park benches where there might be juvenile drug dealers for the trees to fall on?
