Fake 51

Snapped in the course of the visit to John Lewis noticed in the previous post.

Fake in the sense that the sturdy looking steel column was actually stood on some kind of box, with the actual concrete a few inches below. I may no longer expect structure to match function in a visible and straightforward way, but they could try a bit harder than this.

Or put another way, sloppy detailing, using what appears to be up-front structural components which are actually more by way of trim, with the structural stuff being hidden inside the box. There is a lot of steel work of this sort in the London Bridge area, some of it very substantial, but I dare say a lot of that is fake too.
