A chance footnote to the previous post. In the form of a tablet at the bottom of a monument to the writer Congreve erected by his mistress, the second Duchess of Marlborough, the daughter of the first Duchess, one of the subjects of the film noticed in that previous post. The monument being erected quite close to the west door of Westminster Abbey, perhaps the best position the duchess could secure, even given the lax standards of her times.
She was able to succeed to her father's Dukedom on his death in 1722 by special dispensation of the House of Commons - a force to be reckoned with at that time.
Congreve was reckoned to be the father of her fifth child, made a great deal of money during his short career and left all that was left to the second Duchess. Maybe she had expensive habits.
