More left over soup

Take half a dozen left over, boiled potatoes. A splash of left over cabbage, carrot and parsnip. Blend in around a pint of water, with the result being something like the consistency of custard.

Add the contents of a Knorr chicken stock pot, this last being a little plastic tub of a pale brown jelly, 8 for £2 from Sainsbury's. Or 4 if you don't think you are going to get through that many.

Take four or five small sticks of celery, thinly sliced crosswise, and 4oz of spelt - a new-to-us quantity, looking a bit like pearl barley - and simmer in around a pint of water for around 20 minutes.

Stir it all together and bring back to the boil. Simmer for five minutes then serve.

Serviceable, cheap and cheerful.
