The careless cucumber noticed at reference 1 is still there, not yet taken down by the various frosts and now getting on for six inches high.
Weakening on the cucumber theory, although cucumber, marrow or melon seeds in the kitchen waste make them a strong candidate. Cucumbers and melons being eaten reasonably regularly, marrows from time to time. Does the compost get strong enough, hot enough to kill off seeds of this sort when they are a few inches under? Starting to wonder about beans and potatoes, it being so long since I have grown either that I have forgotten what their seedlings look like.
