Amusement

I was interested to read in the 'Surrey Downs' magazine this morning of Rowlandsons, the well known jewellers of Mayfair, who had taken a full page advertisement therein.

The magazine being a fairly glossy, A4 magazine which is pushed through our letter box from time to time and which mainly consists of advertisements directed at suburban people who would like to think they were county people - a breed which I imagine is actually more or less extinct, at least around here. No more real class any more.

Rowlandsons appear to operate a high end rag-and-bone operation, wanting to take a peek at your unwanted old jewellery. In a few days time they will be in a hall in nearby Banstead. Cash is also offered for gold and silver coins.

High end lustre is given by an address in Mayfair, 84 Brook Street, snapped from gmaps above. Left hand brown door. Which does not appear to be a walk-in jeweller at all and which I would guess operates an accommodation address service for businesses of this sort. If I remember, I will walk past next time I am in town.

There is a web site, reference 1, sporting some glossy photographs. What would happen if one tried the contact points given?

On the other hand, there does seem to be a serious jewellery designer of this name, serious enough to figure at sales at Bonham's and Sotheby's. Plus some kind of connection to the world of horse racing. Haven't quite puzzled that one out yet. Or, indeed, any of the rest of it.

PS: later: and thinking of pushing things through letter boxes, I passed a hired white transit van a couple of times late yesterday afternoon which appeared to be touring the area collecting up pairs of pushers after their hard day's work pushing things through letter boxes. Quite a few of them looked as if they might have arrived in this country in, say, the last ten years.
