Kippers

Regular readers will know that I like kippers, particularly the ones from Waitrose, and that I like to test waitresses in hotels about such things, most recently at the Beachcroft in Bognor Regis. While the last occasion on which I was sure that I had real kippers - that is to say complete with heads, tails and backbones - in a hotel at Ardlui at the northern end of Loch Lomond, the hotel of reference 1. A splendid establishment, if rather a long drive from Epsom. We have stayed there perhaps twice, most recently before bloglife, so quite a while ago. It may well be that the place has been somewhat developed since we were there.

Kippers for breakfast there meant two entire kippers, large, strong and grilled. That is to say, not simmered in water, our current preference for cooking them.

So I was amused to read a letter from a fellow kippophile in today's DT, more properly the ST, a letter from one Stephan Buczacki, a chap whom BH knows all about as a creditable performer on radio. While Cortana reveals him to be a prolific author about matters flower and vegetable, possibly second only to the late Dr. D.G Hessayon, the son of a Cypriot landowner who grew up in Salford (this according to Wikipedia). While Bucsacki is the name of a Polish noble house dating from at least the 14th century, although this particular one grew up in Derbyshire (this also according to Wikipedia).

Presumably, only a very distant connection to the György Buzsáki that I know of, domiciled in the US but hailing from Hungary. More or less exactly 2 months younger than myself. See references 3 and 4.

But what is an otherwise respectable gardening chap doing writing letters to the DT? Is he also somewhat right of centre politically? On the other hand, he is also keen on compost heaps, so he can't be all bad.

PS: the letter may have caught BH's eye as, as it happens, we had kippers (from Craster) from Waitrose for lunch yesterday.
