Wellingtonia 20

This one was hiding in plain sight, in the middle of the roundabout which connects Christchurch Road to Horton Lane, a roundabout I must have driven, cycled or walked around hundreds of times. Perhaps I had been confused by its being a young tree which had not yet acquired the characteristic shape of an older tree. I suppose that the lower branches had been trimmed by the roundabout garden maintenance men, who also kept a path open so that you could get at it.

A close up with zoom showing the characteristic leaf scales of the Wellingtonia.

While the trunk is not yet showing the rough, red, furrowed appearance of the older trunk, visible towards end of the notice of the last Wellingtonia, at reference 1. Although it is showing where all the lower branches had been trimmed off.

Still pretty confident about the identification though.

Perhaps the same man on the council who was responsible for the pair of these trees planted in Longmead Road was responsible for this one. Good that the council cares about such things.

PS: I am reminded that there used to be a rule about a tree needing to be X metres high in order to be scored, the rule which excluded the Longmead Road trees. So this one is probably pretty marginal.
