Some years ago now, a barmaid at the Tooting Wetherspoon's suggested I up my game from their basic Sauvignon Blanc to the one produced at Marlborough by the Villa Maria people. Still only six or seven pounds for a large glass, not bad at all for a London pub.
The stuff has been our house wine ever since, except for high days and holidays. Nearly always bought from the convenient branch of Majestic Wine in East Street - a lot more convenient that is than deep diving into the Tier One Sainsbury's at Kiln Lane.
Then a few days ago, Majestic sent me an email about their promotion of a new Sauvignon Blanc from the same people, called Taylors Pass Vineyard. The area called Marlborough grows by the minute! A new Sauvignon Blanc which, it seems, took the silver cup at the summer fête organised by the growers in that area. Of which we subsequently took six and started one yesterday evening. Rather good we thought.
Maybe the basic Villa Maria has been knocked of our perch?
