Up north

The card snapped above fell out of my recently acquired copy of Webster's, shipped down from somewhere up north. Sufficiently old-speak that the three colour photographs have been stuck onto a piece of white card. Originally from Moor Prints, of 26 Cumberland Street, Sheffield. Bing knows all about them from business directories, but they don't appear to still be in business. While Street View, not great at street numbers, suggests that this address may have been absorbed by an authentic Bangladeshi restaurant called 'Shapla', which dates from 1979. Which does not compute, given the date in the central panel of the snap.

However, well dressing does compute, to the extent of there being an entry in Wikipedia at reference 3: 'Well dressing, also known as well flowering, is a tradition practised in some parts of rural England in which wells, springs and other water sources are decorated with designs created from flower petals. The custom is most closely associated with the Peak District of Derbyshire and Staffordshire'. Apparently some wells are a bit slack about enforcing the rules about petals and natural materials.

There is another one for Baslow at reference 4, a village mainly notable at this distance for having an old bridge over the Derwent, an old church and the north gate to Chatsworth House. No doubt once over-provided with public houses and hotels to cater for the needs of the inhabitants, staff, visitors and hangers-on to the big house.

A little to the south east of High Peak, otherwise Kinder Scout. A mountain which I remember as being capped with an extensive dissected peak bog. But it is many years - probably more than half a century - since I was last there.
