It's moving south

I read this morning that the sort of churches which seem to dominate the interior of the United States have moved south, down to Brazil. Particularly to the western part of Brazil, the Mato Grosso, where they grow a lot of soya beans for the Chinese.

In particular the World Church of God's Power, from whose very up-to-the-minute website the snap above is taken.

Outfits which I do not care for myself, but which, some say, provide a bit of social anchoring for the people living in a rapidly growing state, a long way from the traditional centres of power and authority. Perhaps comparable to the steadying influence of the early church on the leaders of the kingdoms emerging from the ruins of the Roman Empire in western Europe?  Or the steadying influence of the later church on the leaders of the Wild West of the second half of the nineteenth century?

Not matters on which I would care to comment.
